Permanent hair removal is not a “one size fits all” procedure. Studies have been conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston (where laser hair removal was invented) to understand how and why hairs react differently even on the same body. Studies with laser shows that the most effective treatments are preformed at intervals 6 weeks apart.

Additionally, the equipment used and strength of the laser beam play a major role in determining the effectiveness of your treatment and the amount of treatments needed. Dr. Gaucher calculated the relationship between hair cycles and regrowth in seven commonly treated areas. The area to be treated was shaved the day of or the day before. The area was then treated with an 755-nm long pulse alexandrite laser. The median usual growth time for the upper lip, for example, was 6-15 days, versus about 30 days for the legs. A predictable regrowth time “is related to the hair cycle of the area, the synchronization the laser gives to the hair cycle. "It is a way of personalizing the hair cycle with patients,” she commented. Hair regrowth also takes longer after subsequent laser treatments in a predictable manner, according to the results.

Factors that determine hair removal treatments:

• Color of skin (darker skinned patients require more treatments)
• Color of hair
• Thickness of hair
• Where the hair is located on the body

Female facial hair on the sides of face typically requires more treatments than the bikini area, and it is for this reason that we customize your treatment. The bikini area of an African American/South East Asian patient typically requires more treatments than paler skin. Essentially Bare consults with patients and tests how the laser reacts to your skin and hair, prior to customizing a treatment plan for you, based on the test results. We never ask our patients to pay in advance for a set number treatments (you may or may not need). We will not treat everyone because, not everyone can be effectively treated with laser. For these patients we recommend other forms of hair removal such as electrolysis (some of our clinics offer this, please call for details).
